Every lineup DFS Hero builds is a bet on a projection and an ownership for each player. DFS Hero supplies both in the Hero Proj and Hero Own columns. You get your own copy in My Proj and My Own, and you can change any cell. This article explains where the Hero numbers come from, how to edit yours, what Rdm % does with them, and how to get back to the defaults.
Before you start
- Decide which number the build should use. Projection Source in the Basic tab of Build Settings picks Hero Projection or My Projection. See Basic tab.
Where Hero Proj and Hero Own come from
Hero Proj is DFS Hero's projected score for the player on the site's scoring: the average score across 10,000 simulated games. Game Sim shows the percentiles around it. See Game Sim.
Hero Own is DFS Hero's projected ownership: the share of the tournament field expected to roster the player. The simulator builds the field you compete against from it, and Lev in the grid compares it with how often the player lands in winning lineups.
Edit My Proj and My Own
My Proj and My Own start equal to the Hero values. To change one:
- Click the cell.
- Press Enter. The cell becomes a number field.
- Type the new value and press Enter.
An edited cell turns warm orange when your number is above the Hero number and cool blue when it is below, and it shows a small ×. These are the colors of the boost and dock icons, so one color means one direction everywhere in the grid. The column header counts the players you changed. The Hero column next to it does not change.
On a showdown or single-game slate, a My Proj edit on either row of a player changes the other row too. The CPT or MVP row stays at 1.5 times the base row, because the build scores the captain seat that way. In card view the same edit lives in the PROJ field on the card. A typed My Proj also clears any boost on the player, because the typed number is your final number. For a quick nudge in 5% steps, use the Boost column instead. See Boost and dock a player.
What the build does with My Proj
The optimizer uses My Proj only when Projection Source is My Projection. My Projection is the default, and it equals Hero Proj for every player you did not edit. Under Hero Projection your edits do nothing. A My Proj of 0 under My Projection removes the player from the build. A My Proj above 0 on a player DFS Hero projects at 0 brings that player back into the pool.
Min Player Projection, the Proj floor in the Basic tab's Player Floors (an automatic floor by sport and slate size), applies after your edits. A player you project at 0.5 leaves the pool, unless the player is locked, has a Min Exp above 0, or fills a roster slot the floor would leave short. To remove a player for certain, exclude the player.
What My Own is for
My Own is your own view of the slate's ownership, kept next to DFS Hero's number so you can compare the two. The simulator reads it too. Your simulated opponents roster each player at your My Own, so a chalk player you mark lower shows up less often in the simulated field.
The optimizer does read it. Every ownership rule in Build Settings checks My Own when you set it and DFS Hero's ownership otherwise: Min Player Ownership (the Own floor in the Basic tab's Player Floors, an automatic floor by sport and slate size), Min/Max Total Ownership, and Force Low Ownership. Under the Own floor, a player under the floor leaves the pool before the build, with four exceptions: a locked player stays, a player with a Min Exp above 0 stays, a player with no ownership projection stays, and a roster slot that the floor would leave short gets its players back. To remove a player for certain, exclude the player. See Lock, exclude, and filter players.
The Rdm % column
Rdm % is the randomness applied to each player's projection while the optimizer builds. Every lineup uses a slightly different copy of the projections, and Rdm % is the size of that wobble for one player.
- With Smart Randomness on (the default), DFS Hero picks each player's value from their volatility: lower for a steady starter, higher for a boom-or-bust receiver. The tiers Minimum, Moderate, and Aggressive scale every value.
- With Manual Randomness, every row gets the flat percentage you typed.
- An edit to a cell overrides the value for that player, in either mode. See Randomness.
Get back to the Hero numbers
Four ways back:
- Click the × in an edited My Proj or My Own cell. The cell goes back to the Hero number. On a showdown slate, the × in My Proj resets both rows of the player.
- Click the My Proj or My Own column header, then Reset all. This clears every edit in that column on the build: typed numbers, Mins edits, blends, and uploads. The message that follows offers Undo for a few seconds.
- Reset all player edits in the Filters popover. This clears every per-player edit on the build, including locks, exclusions, exposure limits, and Rdm % edits. See Lock, exclude, and filter players.
- Open Projection Hub from the grid's more menu, go to the Blend tab, click 100% Hero, then Apply. This writes Hero Proj into My Proj for every player and leaves locks and exposures alone.
To undo a single Rdm % edit, type the old value back into the cell.
A boost is separate from these edits, and the first two leave it in place. Clear boosts in the Filters popover removes every boost and leaves your typed numbers alone.
The Blend tab also works the other way. Click Hero + Ceiling, or set your own mix of Hero Proj, Ceiling, and Floor that totals 100%, and Apply writes it into My Proj.
When projections refresh
DFS Hero updates projections through the week and more often on game day. Each refresh replaces Hero Proj and Hero Own. Your My Proj and My Own edits stay as you typed them, so an override you set on Tuesday still stands on Sunday after the numbers around it moved.
A refresh can also remove a player. A player whose projection drops to 0, for example after an inactive report, leaves the pool, and a player in a postponed game leaves with no way to add them back.
Tips
- Edit projections when you want the build to rank players differently. My Proj reaches the optimizer only under My Projection. My Own reaches it through the ownership rules above, never through the projection.
- Keep a short list of edits. Ten strong opinions beat a full re-projection of the slate.
- Use Projection Hub for anything bigger than a handful of edits. See Upload custom projections.
- After a refresh, scan the cells with a ×. Your override may now sit far from the new Hero number, or on the other side of it.
- Compare your My Proj with the Game Sim percentiles. A projection above the 75th percentile is a ceiling call, and the build treats it as the average.
Troubleshooting
"New data available": fresh projections arrived while you had the slate open. Click Refresh in the toast to load them.
A player vanished from the grid: the refresh set their projection to 0, or their game was postponed. Check All under Player Type in the Filters popover to see every player on the slate.
My edit did not change the build: Projection Source was switched to Hero Projection. Switch it back to My Projection in the Basic tab and rebuild.
"Blend applied to My Proj for {N} players. {M} now project below Min Player Projection ({floor}) and will be left out of builds. Lower it in Settings to keep them.": the blend pushed some players under the floor. Lower the Proj floor in Player Floors on the Basic tab, or accept the smaller pool. A locked player, a player with a Min Exp above 0, and a player a short roster slot needs stay in the pool even under the floor.
