What Late Swap does

Last updated Sep 24, 2026

Late swap is the way you change entries after the first games of a slate start. Once a game starts, every player in that game is locked on DraftKings and FanDuel. Swap re-solves only the seats whose games have not started, keeps every locked player in place, and prepares a new entries file you upload to the site again.

Locked and unlocked players

DFS Hero decides lock state per seat, from the start time of each player's game:

  • A player is locked when his game has started. Swap keeps him in place.
  • A player is unlocked when his game has not started. Swap can replace him.
  • A player whose start time is unknown counts as locked.

An entry is swappable when at least one of its seats is unlocked. Lock state comes from the site's game clock, so the verdict is the same in every time zone.

Which slates support Swap

Swap works on classic slates in these sports, on both DraftKings and FanDuel: NFL, CFB, NBA, CBB, WNBA, MLB, NHL, and soccer.

Swap is not available on showdown and single-game slates, or in golf, MMA, NASCAR, tennis, F1, and League of Legends. On those slates the toolbar has no Swap button, and DFS Hero closes the fill once the first game starts, because every fill would touch a locked player.

Where to find Swap

  • Workspace toolbar. The Swap button next to the entries button. When DFS Hero detects players who are out, a badge on the button shows how many.
  • Phone. The Tools sheet has a row Swap.
  • Notifications. A player-out or late-swap notification opens the slate with the Swap sheet already open.

The sheet needs a filled entries file.

What "Next lock" means

Use the lock clock at the top of the Swap sheet to find the next deadline before you preview a swap. It shows every game start on the slate as a wave, with a countdown. Games that already started fold into one cell with a lock icon. The soonest future wave is Next lock, in bold, and it turns amber when less than 30 minutes remain.

Next lock is your deadline for the whole sheet. When it passes, any swap that changed a player in that wave is no longer valid. After you apply a swap, DFS Hero tracks a tighter Swap deadline per entry: the earliest start among the players the swap changed. Upload the new file to the site before it.

When to run a late swap

  • A player is ruled out. Turn on Player Out Notifications in Settings. The Swap button badge shows the count, and the sheet opens in Replace outs with those entries already selected.
  • Projections moved after lock. Turn on Late Swap Opportunities in Settings. DFS Hero sends "Late swap: <player> projection changed <n>%" after the slate locks.
  • You want a fresh solve. Re-optimize re-solves every open seat in every swappable entry with the current projections.
  • You want one specific change. Pivot swaps one named player for another in every entry that holds him.

Run the swap early enough to upload the file. When the next lock is under 30 minutes away, start with the entries that lock soonest.

What happens on the site

DFS Hero never changes your entries on DraftKings or FanDuel by itself. A swap changes the entries DFS Hero stores. Until you download the file and upload it on the site, the site still holds your old lineups. Undo in the Swap sheet also changes only DFS Hero's copy.

Plans

The Swap sheet is part of both plans, Essential and Power. Hero Chat can run a late swap for you, and Hero Chat needs the Power plan.
